My vast 30 years of practical experience working with people with scoliosis and various other diseases of the spine has led me to the firm conviction that it is pointless to treat mechanical disorders in the skeletal structure of the spine using passive methods! Medicines, physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture and any other passive means of treatment, where the doctor moves, and not the patient, help only temporarily; they will relieve pain and inflammation, but they will not be able to return the vertebrae to their place or straighten the curvature of the bone structure.

So, it is impossible to straighten a curved and adjusted structure forever by forceful manipulation of another person; the vertebrae will always slide back because there is no supporting muscle corset.

Contraindications

Before you begin performing exercises to treat scoliosis, you need to consider possible limitations and contraindications:

  • Jogging with spinal curvature is only possible in the first and second stages of the disease. In more difficult stages, running is prohibited. It is also not recommended if the disease progresses rapidly. All other types of athletics are also not recommended.
  • You should not perform asymmetrical exercises, that is, those that put stress on one side of the body. When they occur, there is an uneven distribution of the load on the hip joints, which negatively affects the course of the disease. For the same reason, you should not dance.
  • Asana for scoliosis in the form of a lotus pose is contraindicated, as it causes improper loading of the hip joints during the disease.
  • Somersaults are strictly prohibited at all stages of the disease.
  • Active games such as badminton, basketball, volleyball, football are also prohibited. Because of the sudden movements and intense body turns that are used in them.

Contraindications for scoliosis can also be caused by concomitant diseases.

Gymnastics for scoliosis

The ONLY effective and safe treatment for scoliosis is gymnastics for scoliosis , and more specifically, it is the correction of the spinal column with technically correct exercises and the same development of symmetrical muscles. And, what is especially important for me, exercises for scoliosis should be performed only in a LYING position, with complete unloading of the spine. This is regular and targeted training aimed at equalizing the strength of the muscles of the front, back and 2 lateral surfaces of the body; it is equalizing the strength of the skeletal muscles that will ensure a gradual RECONFIGURATION of the entire musculoskeletal system of the spine.

This is a long process, but the most reliable and safe for a person and, most importantly, for the growing and developing child’s body! The main thing is to start doing therapeutic exercises for scoliosis in childhood and not waste precious time.

Very often, it is difficult for me, an experienced exercise therapy trainer, to qualify the standard prescriptions of neurologists. A patient with a spinal structure curved by scoliosis complains of headaches and pressure surges, but MRI readings show no changes in the blood vessels of the brain. The doctor, despite the good MRI results... without finding any cerebral vascular disorders, still prescribes the drugs Cavinton or droppers of Actovegin and Thiocetam - these are the strongest drugs that are used to treat stroke, encephalopathy and other ischemic disorders in adults and children! Why should a patient treat non-existent diseases? Why treat healthy blood vessels? Just in case?

It would be much more reasonable and competent to prescribe regular therapeutic exercises using professionally selected exercise systems aimed at correcting scoliosis. The first case is characterized by complete recovery after just six months of regular and persistent physical therapy exercises.

Such therapeutic physical training will be effective only in the first 2 stages, while curvature of the spine is best treated before the age of 25. It is during this period that the most active development of tissues of the musculoskeletal system occurs. Of course, treatment also helps at an older age, but it may take much longer.

By technically correct exercises, I mean exercises that clearly, in accordance with the laws of biomechanics of the human body , equalize the strength of all 4 muscular walls of the body, gradually and painlessly return the vertebrae to their original place, restore balance to the body, the lost correct shape of the spine, and its joints functionality.

Technically correct exercises for scoliosis must be systematized and, above all, must be safe and effective. They may be difficult to perform and even uncomfortable at first, but they should not cause pain and in no case should they harm or aggravate the disease!

The straightening effect from correctly selected exercises should be visually visible after a month of daily training, but if you exercise for more than a month and do not see the effect, this means you are wasting time and doing the wrong exercises, and you need to urgently stop exercising so as not to harm the spine and its joints in the treatment of scoliosis.

A correctly selected system of exercises for spinal scoliosis:

  • It will tone all symmetrical muscles and eliminate muscle imbalance, which is one of the culprits of curvature of the bone structure of the spine. Basic set of exercises

The initial set of exercises for grade 1 scoliosis includes the following parts:

  • warm-up;

  • exercises, initial position - lying on your stomach;
  • exercises, IP - standing, - you need to rest between exercises in the starting position, that is, if the exercise is done lying on your back, then you need to rest in the same position.

The lesson begins with unloading the spinal column. Get into a knee-elbow position and walk for at least 2-3 minutes.

Exercises performed while lying on your back

These exercises help strengthen your abdominal muscles:

  1. Spinal column traction. Lying on your back, pull your legs down as much as possible and your arms up for 15 seconds. Repeat 3-4 times.
  2. "Bike". Make movements reminiscent of riding a bicycle, while ensuring that the distance between the lower limbs and the floor is as small as possible. Perform for half a minute, 3 approaches.
  3. "Scissors". Make horizontal and vertical crossed swings with the lower limbs. Perform horizontal swings as close to the floor surface as possible. Do the exercises for half a minute, 3 sets.

Exercises while lying on your stomach

Exercises lying on your stomach help strengthen your back muscles:

  1. Spinal traction. Lying on your stomach, stretch your lower and upper limbs. Do the exercise 4 times for 15 seconds.
  2. "Swimming". Lying on your stomach, lower limbs straight, head resting on the back of your palms. Bend at the waist, simultaneously raise your head, upper torso, upper and lower limbs. In this position, perform movements reminiscent of breaststroke swimming.
  3. Lying on your stomach, your head is on the outside of your hand, your lower limbs are extended. Make horizontal and vertical swings with them, while making sure that your hips are lifted off the floor.
  4. Hold. The starting position is the same as in the exercise above. Raise your head, upper torso and limbs at the same time. Bring the lower limbs together, spread the upper limbs to the sides, palms facing up. Stay in the position for a quarter of a minute. Do it 4 times. The break between exercises is 10 seconds.

Working in a standing position

Standing exercises:

Rotation of hands. Stand straight, spread your elbows to the sides, place the pads of your fingers on your shoulders. Make rotational movements with your arms backwards

Squats. Stand up straight, spread your upper limbs to the sides, palms facing up

Stand on your toes, then squat down, then back on your toes and take the original position. Do 5-10 squats slowly.
