Drug therapy
Drug therapy is of great importance, thanks to which the patient’s condition will improve much faster, especially in the acute phase. Taking analgesics and antispasmodics will help relieve pain.
This method is aimed at combating disorders that develop in tissues during prolonged compression. The doctor prescribes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. This leads to a reduction in swelling.
To relieve muscle spasms, medications are used that help relax highly tense muscles, reducing pain. B-group vitamins are required, which are needed by all tissues of the body, including the nervous tissue.
Massage
Spinal massage, performed according to all the rules, promotes:
- improving blood circulation;
- influx of active substances to the sore spot;
- activation of reflex connections;
- tissue regeneration.
In our clinic, doctors perform a painless and gentle massage, during which they use balms and creams that have an analgesic effect. During the procedure, the spine vibrates due to rubbing, stroking and kneading. As a result, the cervical muscular frame is strengthened, the disc returns to its original position, and the protrusion decreases.
Physiotherapy
Exercise therapy is a set of exercises, the implementation of which helps:
- stretch and relax the back muscles;
- improve blood circulation and motor abilities;
- increase flexibility and mobility of the spine;
- increase muscle activity in the painful area
There are many special exercises for these purposes. Which one is suitable for each case must be decided by the attending physician. The doctors of our clinic will help you choose exercise therapy for a specific patient, especially since this procedure is carried out exclusively by an experienced specialist. You cannot do exercises by force, rotate your head, or move your neck sharply and vigorously. All movements should be performed smoothly and unhurriedly.
Physiotherapy
Treatment of protrusion of the intervertebral discs of the cervical spine is impossible without the use of physiotherapeutic methods, during which the affected area is warmed up. As a result, neck pain is reduced, biochemical processes are activated in tissues, and nerve impulses and blood circulation are also revived.
In order to achieve the greatest therapeutic result, the patient may be prescribed:
- electrophoresis;
- magnetic therapy;
- electromyostimulation;
- paraffin applications.
All these methods are contraindicated in the acute phase of the disease. Such procedures are not used if a person has a decrease in movements and also has severe headaches.
Spinal traction
Spinal traction is one of the most famous methods of treating cervical protrusion. It is resorted to if therapy has not brought a positive result. With traction, all organs of the spinal column return to their normal position, and the load on some of its areas decreases.
The use of exercise therapy for protrusion of the cervical spine
It will not be possible to cure such a serious pathology without physical therapy . Exercise therapy effectively tones the muscles, creating a kind of “framework” around the damaged spine, restores joint mobility, and improves blood circulation.
Exercise increases metabolism, which contributes to additional nutrition of the spinal tissues.
Important! When performing exercises, you need to monitor your sensations and if severe pain and discomfort appears, stop exercising. At the beginning of treatment, it is better to exercise under the supervision of a specialist, and only after the exacerbation has subsided, you can begin independent exercise.
Advantages of the method
Did you know that...
Next fact
Exercise therapy must necessarily be present in the complex treatment of protrusion. Regular exercise will help reduce the load on the diseased area of the spine , helping not only to get rid of the pathology, but also to prevent its occurrence in the future.
Therapeutic exercises help strengthen the neck muscles, which further relieves stress on the spine
Exercises must be done carefully, smoothly, without sudden movements , which increases the flexibility of the joints and strengthens the neck muscles. Classes must be carried out for a long time, otherwise surgical intervention will be required.
When performing exercises, the damaged disc returns to its place, and the protrusion does not develop into a hernia . Exercises must be done daily, several times a day.
When can it be used
Exercise therapy helps well at the initial stage of the disease, but is also used in more severe cases. It is not advisable to resort to physical therapy during the acute period of the disease. First you need to relieve pain, swelling and inflammation. After that, physical education classes must be performed, but very carefully, without sudden movements.
Contraindications for use for protrusion
There are no direct contraindications to exercise therapy, but some precautions must be taken. The types of exercises and their complexity should be selected by the doctor individually , in each individual case. Begin classes with the simplest exercises, which are performed every other day.
Gradually, the load, duration and complexity of completing tasks increases. The main contraindication to exercise therapy is the period of exacerbation of the disease. To avoid complications, you need to do a short warm-up before starting classes.
It will warm up the muscles and increase the effectiveness of the exercises.

Surgical technique
Treatment of cervical protrusion by surgical intervention is allowed when conservative therapy has failed to cope with its task. Most often this concerns advanced situations.
Today there are modern surgical methods, one of which includes laser treatment. The procedure involves a laser penetrating the surface of the disc, partially vaporizing and shrinking the nucleus pulposus. After these actions, the disk becomes smaller and returns to its proper place.
Treatment of cervical protrusion will be effective if it is prescribed and monitored by an experienced doctor. These are the specialists who work in our clinic. They are ready to provide qualified medical care to patients who have pathology associated with intervertebral discs of the cervical spine.

Hernia and protrusions
Relapses can also be treated non-surgically, like any hernia, even in a very advanced state. Moreover, sometimes hernias are mistaken for protrusions, which are even easier to cure even without a visit to the doctor. You just need to follow some recommendations and perform gymnastics for the neck, which puts the condition of the spine in order. It’s enough just to undergo an MRI examination, get a doctor’s opinion and step by step perform regular gymnastics exercises developed by Alexander Yuryevich.
You can get more information about this and many other aspects of health related to blood pressure, osteochondrosis, atherosclerosis, ask your questions to Dr. Shishonin and just chat by joining our community - the Club of Former Hypertensive Patients
.
If we talk in more detail about protrusions and hernia, then protrusion is an intermediate state between a healthy disc and a damaged hernia, which leads not only to painful sensations, but can affect nerves and blood vessels.
Protrusion is characterized by a slight enlargement of the disc due to inflammatory processes, without loss of joint mobility or sensitivity of the limbs. With a hernia, neuralgic disorders may occur, as well as sharp, severe pain. A hernia requires mandatory observation by a doctor, and a correct diagnosis is important.
Advice:
You cannot rely only on the visual manifestations of the disease: the symptoms are more important, since even a small hernia can be very painful, while a large protrusion can be almost asymptomatic.
You can learn more about the symptoms and anatomical features of the development of these two diseases by watching other videos on Dr. Shishonin’s blog.

Exercise therapy for cervical protrusion: technique and implementation features
At the beginning, classes must be carried out lying on an orthopedic mattress , and only then on a gymnastic mat. To better warm up your muscles, you need to take a warm bath, and during exercise it is important to breathe properly. After a set of workouts, you must rest in a horizontal position for 20-30 minutes.
Before starting classes, doctors recommend doing a short warm-up . You can perform it up to 3 times a day, but very carefully, without sudden movements.
First, you need to tilt your head forward as much as possible, trying to touch your chin to your chest and return to the starting position. Then, the head is slowly tilted in the opposite direction, back.
The next step is to tilt your head to the right and left. Another way to warm up is to smoothly turn your head so that your chin aligns with your shoulder line. All these exercises must be repeated at least 12 times.
Pay attention to how to properly warm up your neck before the main set of exercises.
Next, shoulders are added to this complex. They are raised and lowered about 10 times, and then moved back and forth.
Only after a full warm-up can you proceed directly to classes.
- The patient lies on his back and bends his knees. The arms remain extended along the body and the hips rise. In this position, you need to linger a little (2-3 seconds) and lower your hips.
- The patient kneels, resting his palms on the floor. First, he raises his left arm and right leg at the same time, and then vice versa – his right arm and left leg. Perform the exercise 8-10 times.
- Another simple exercise is performed like this: the patient lies on his back, stretches his arms along the body, and bends his knees slightly. At the same time, the abdominal muscles become very tense, but the breathing remains even and calm.
- In the same position, you need to slightly raise your upper body and hold for a few seconds. Return to the starting position and relax.
- Lying on your back, stretch strongly, stretching your arms up.
- The patient is placed on his stomach, face down. After which, the head, arms and upper body are slowly raised, without lifting the hips and legs from the floor.
- You can place the patient on his stomach on a stool, relax the muscles and do deep bends forward. This will effectively stretch the spine and reduce pressure on the nerve endings.
Simply walking on all fours around the room brings very good results. At the same time, the back should remain straight, without bending, and in one approach you need to complete 6-8 large circles. You will have to repeat this exercise at least 5 times a day.

If it hurts during physical therapy
There are several reasons for the appearance of painful discomfort. Before stopping training, you should assess your condition:
- My cervical spine started to hurt a few hours after gymnastics. In most cases, this happens because patients strive to perform the specified number of repetitions without listening to their feelings. The accumulation of lactic acid leads to muscle pain. Stretching and performing a general complex of exercise therapy will alleviate the condition that has arisen.
- My neck hurts a little before training. The cause is often myospasms, which disappear after moderate physical activity.
- One of the exercises recommended by the doctor causes pain. In this case, you should try reducing the number of repetitions or slowing down the range of motion. If this does not help, then you should refuse to perform this element and consult a doctor.
Contraindications for exercise therapy are exacerbation of the disease and severe pain in the cervical spine. In other cases, moderate strength training is permitted under medical supervision. It is better to exercise under the guidance of a physical therapy instructor during the onset of pain.
Preventive measures and possible complications
If you ignore the problem and do not want to contact a specialist, the pathology can become progressive. This is fraught with the appearance of acute pain, compression of the spinal roots, rupture of the fibrous ring and the formation of a disc herniation. Moreover, prolonged compression of nerve endings can lead to paralysis in the legs and malfunction of the pelvic organs. Such negative manifestations can only be eliminated through surgical intervention. During the rehabilitation period, it is necessary to minimize the load on the spine, avoid prolonged stay in an uncomfortable position, lose weight, take daily walks in the fresh air, practice physical exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Preventative exercise
To prevent the disc from bulging beyond the vertebrae or to prolong the period of remission, it is recommended to do maintenance exercises:
- stretching;
- increased mobility due to increased range of motion;
- power load to strengthen the muscle frame.
Almost all the elements are in the exercise therapy complex developed by the doctor. And for those who decide to do exercises in advance to avoid the appearance of protrusion, you can use the exercises from the proposed video.
