How to make your own orthopedic pillow for the tailbone

For injuries to the hip joint or coccyx, diseases of the pelvis, rectum and other diseases, an orthopedic pillow for the coccyx is often used. It eases the manifestation of symptoms, helps to survive the rehabilitation period, and speeds up recovery. Products are made from polyurethane foam, foam rubber, latex or felt. The shelf life of an orthopedic pillow is about 5 years. To prevent it from losing its properties, it must be promptly cleaned of dirt, washed only with gentle products, and avoid exposure to high temperatures.

It is important to choose the right product. The material from which it is made, as well as the purpose of use, are taken into account. If the pillow will be used on car seats, it is better to give preference to a rectangular shape. To prevent bedsores, cone-shaped products are prescribed. You can sew your own pillow. In this case, great importance should be given to the choice of filler.

Functionality of the pillow

The orthopedic device in question performs the following functions:

  • Relieves tension in the sacral, spinal and pelvic areas;
  • Relieves pain symptoms in the anorectal area;
  • Prevents stagnation of blood supply in the pelvis;
  • Improves blood circulation in the spinal vessels and internal organs of the small pelvis;
  • Reduces stress on joints and normalizes muscle tone;
  • Helps speed up the rehabilitation period after injuries and surgeries;
  • Helps maintain posture in various forms of spinal curvature;
  • Prevention of bedsores.

Indications and contraindications

An orthopedic pillow for the coccyx will be useful not only for patients with health problems, but also as a preventive measure for people who, due to their profession, are in a sitting position for a long time. The orthopedic effect of such a device will help in the following cases:

  1. Pathology or injury to the perineal or pelvic organs. The healing circle will reduce pain, improve blood circulation, and speed up the recovery process.
  2. During the rehabilitation period after surgery.
  3. In the postpartum period, a pillow for coccydynia will relieve pain from birth injuries and prevent the appearance of hemorrhoids.
  4. For varying degrees of coccyx injuries. Thanks to the pillow, the load on the coccyx and sacrum is reduced, blood circulation is not disturbed, and pain is minimized by preventing the damaged coccyx from touching the chair seat.
  5. Prevention of possible diseases associated with a sedentary or sedentary lifestyle. For people using a wheelchair, this product can be used as an anti-bedsore pillow under the tailbone.

In addition, such a pillow can become a high-quality prevention of hemorrhoids, prostatitis and osteochondrosis. Devices with orthopedic characteristics help maintain correct posture in a person, as a result of which the hip organs and back remain normal.

Indications for use

There are no contraindications to the use of an orthopedic pillow, the only exception being individual intolerance to a certain material. Application is recommended for people who have suffered injuries or have certain diseases, pregnant women and women, after childbirth, after operations in the groin area, during the rehabilitation period, etc. In addition, anyone who spends most of their time in a sitting position can use an orthopedic pillow for the tailbone.

The product is a must-have item for a fractured coccyx. The design feature of the product reduces the load on the coccyx or sacrum. This normalizes blood circulation and reduces the intensity of pain. The same applies to people with prostate diseases, hemorrhoids, spinal deformities, and osteochondrosis.

Varieties

Depending on the shape, the orthopedic pillow under the coccyx is available in the following versions:

  • The rectangular shape is well fixed on the seat and can be used as a stationary one in the workplace or in a car. Used to reduce the load on the spinal column, especially in the coccyx area. Such circles are good at maintaining the required body position in a sitting position, distributing pressure on the spine. A rectangular pillow helps relieve pain and can also be used to prevent osteochondrosis and scoliosis.
  • Cone-shaped pillows are often used to prevent bedsores. This action is ensured by the exchange of air between the hard surface and the damaged part of the body.
  • Orthopedic devices of a round shape, in the form of a small lifebuoy, are quite popular. A sitting circle for pain in the tailbone perfectly relieves the pelvic area and relieves pain symptoms from hemorrhoids or prostatitis. Used for injuries, after childbirth or surgery.

Depending on the filling method, the orthopedic chair cushion for the coccyx is available in an inflatable version or made of latex or polyurethane foam. The properties of such materials provide comfort throughout the day, correctly distributing the load on the spine. When considering budget models, it is worth focusing on the inflatable version of the pillow. Such devices have long established themselves as a good remedy for hemorrhoids. The practicality and ease of use of orthopedic inflatable products actively attracts users, firmly displacing foam rubber analogues.

Who needs to use

Doctors believe that a tailbone pillow is an accessory that benefits almost everyone, especially people who work while sitting.

Categories of people for whom the use of an orthopedic pillow for the butt is a prerequisite:

  • pregnant women or mothers in the postpartum period;
  • people with any diseases;
  • everyone who has suffered trauma;
  • persons who have undergone surgery (especially if the operation was performed in the groin area).

DIY tailbone pillow

It is also possible to make a pillow for the coccyx with your own hands, however, the functional characteristics of such a product will be somewhat inferior to store-bought counterparts. However, the opportunity to relieve discomfort after a long stay in a sitting position or partially relieve the load on the spine remains:

  1. Take measurements of the seating surface where the cushion will be placed; it is recommended to use a standard chair;
  2. When choosing materials for a cover, focus on porous, wear-resistant and durable fabrics;
  3. The role of filler can be played by small balls or foam rubber;
  4. According to the measurements taken, it is necessary to cut out two identical parts, taking into account two-centimeter seam allowances;
  5. Sew both pieces right side inward, but leave 5-10 cm to turn the product right side out and fill it with filling;
  6. Sew up the hole that remains by hand;
  7. It is recommended to sew an additional cover to increase the wear resistance of the pillow.

Cleaning or washing such a product will be easier, since you will know what material the pillow is made of and how it will react to washing. It is recommended to remove the cover before washing.

If using a self-made pillow causes discomfort, it is better to give preference to store-bought models.

Discomfort associated with periodic pain in the coccyx area greatly reduces the quality of life, which negatively affects a person’s physical and mental health. Traveling on public transport, driving, going to the theater or cinema becomes a problem. And if a person suffering from pain of this kind is also engaged in work that requires a long stay in a sitting position, then the question of finding ways to relieve pain in the tailbone becomes extremely important.

In this situation, an orthopedic pillow for the tailbone helps relieve discomfort. It will not be a means to solve the problem once and for all, but it can make life easier with coccygeal pain. A simple item that restores performance and relieves discomfort in a sitting position.

Recovery after a fracture

After the first week, the patient is prescribed rehabilitation therapy. In order not to load the tailbone while sitting, an orthopedic pillow is used.

As additional measures, physical therapy, massage and physiotherapy are prescribed. On average, for a person in good health, complete recovery from a fracture takes a month. But the process can stretch up to 4.

But even after the end of recovery in women, such an injury can be one of the main indicators for the birth of a child via cesarean section.

Benefits and features

The benefits of using a special pillow are undeniable. Pain in the tailbone can occur due to bruises, fractures and other injuries, difficult childbirth, inflammatory processes of internal organs, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, etc. They are felt especially acutely when pressure occurs on the tailbone. Prolonged sitting on hard and semi-hard surfaces can cause pain, which increases sharply when trying to change body position or stand up.

To avoid unpleasant sensations, it is enough to minimize the contact of an excessively hard surface and the coccygeal area. Special pillows, recommended for use for pain in the tailbone, become indispensable in such situations. They allow you to remain in a sitting position for as long as necessary, relieving pressure on the pelvic and coccygeal spine and thereby reducing pain.

Today, orthopedic stores offer a wide selection of pillows, the features of which are:

  • ergonomics;
  • ease of use;
  • high quality materials;
  • ease of care.

In addition, the variety of product dimensions allows them to be used in almost any situation and on any type of seat.

Symptoms of a coccyx fracture

  • sharp piercing pain;
  • painful sensations in the tailbone area when walking;
  • it is impossible to be in a sitting position;
  • pain during bowel movements.

If you notice 2 or more symptoms from the list, it is best to consult a traumatologist. An untreated fracture of the coccyx almost always causes a number of chronic pains that will haunt you throughout your life. Traumatology "Medicentre" is open seven days a week.

Often a fracture of the coccyx can be confused with a bruise or damage to the ligaments, but during fractures small bone spurs break off, which are clearly visible on x-rays. Almost always a fracture of the coccyx is closed. The risk group includes young women. Children injure their tailbone much more often, but, as a rule, we are talking about bruises rather than fractures.

Varieties

Since both doctors and people suffering from pain have long appreciated the effectiveness of using an orthopedic chair cushion, the product is in demand, and manufacturers offer products that differ in many parameters. This makes it possible to select models that are most suitable in each individual case, depending on the causes and nature of pain in the coccyx, the planned frequency of use, physiological characteristics and financial capabilities of buyers.

When choosing a model, you should pay attention to the following important characteristics.

Pillows can be rectangular, cone-shaped or round.

  1. The first ones are more stationary, are better held on the seat, can be used when it is necessary to relieve the load from the spine and, in particular, from the tailbone, in the workplace during sedentary work, and are securely attached to the car seat. They help maintain the correct body position when sitting, redistribute the load on the spine and are successfully used not only as a means of relieving pain, but also for preventive purposes, for example, to prevent scoliosis and osteochondrosis.
  2. The cone-shaped shape of the pillow is often used to prevent bedsores, as it provides air exchange between a hard surface and, for example, a broken part of the body, when any contact of the tailbone with a chair or bed is painful.
  3. Orthopedic products are also common, shaped like a lifebuoy or a donut and well relieving the load on the pelvic area. These models have proven themselves to be effective for pain associated with diseases such as prostatitis, hemorrhoids, as well as injuries and in the postoperative or postpartum periods.

The result of its use largely depends on the material from which the orthopedic pillow for the coccyx is made. The filler can be chosen, for example:

  • polyurethane;
  • latex;
  • memory effect material;
  • felt.

Inflatable models do not have internal filler, which makes them convenient as a mobile option that takes up little space when deflated.

It is worth paying attention to the hypoallergenicity of materials, their hygroscopicity, non-toxicity, resistance to washing and long service life.

For example, the environmentally friendly buckwheat hull used in some models will definitely not cause allergies, but a model with such a filler will last no more than three years. Latex can maintain working condition for about ten years, and the coccyx pillow will serve its owner much longer without losing the necessary orthopedic properties.

This indicator is especially important for people with excess body weight, since some models (for example, inflatable ones) are designed for a weight not exceeding 120 kg.

The discrepancy between the consumer’s body weight and the functional characteristics of the product will make the use of the purchased orthopedic product useless, will not allow achieving the desired effect and will not relieve discomfort in the coccyx area.

Making the bottom pillow

At the very beginning, I will show in the picture which area each part of the pad corresponds to.

1. Take a template and use it to draw 8 pads on the teak. All the folds are drawn on the inside of the pad, one to one, just like on a template.

2. Next, 8 pads are cut out of the fabric. Then, on the outside of the pad, stitching points of 1.3 cm are drawn on all sides. Simply put, you need to count 1.3 cm from each edge and draw it. You will get a rectangle like this. The stitching points are drawn in all 8 pads.

3. Using a ring of scissors, the edges of all pads are bent on all sides. The edges are folded twice, 0.5+0.5 cm, towards the inside of the pad. This results in a double bend, due to which the pad will not fray along the threads, plus the stitching site will be more reliable and will not tear.

4. Next, the pads are sewn together. They are sewn together in rectangles that correspond to the internal partitions of the pillow.

Take 2 pads and apply these rectangles to each other, with the drawn side out. The pads are placed one on top of the other 1 to 1, well, as if in an even stack, like sheets of paper for printing on a printer. Thread fastenings are made from 4 corners of the rectangle. Then, the pads are pinned together along the contour of the rectangle. They are fastened in 3 places and slightly lower to secure the fabric.

Next, the pads are sewn together on a machine. First, 2 pads are sewn together, then the third, fourth, and so on are sewn to them. The result is 8 pillows sewn together into one large pillow.

5. Next, the pads are sewn on top using a machine. Each pad is sewn in turn, from the outside.

First, the edges are folded and threaded at the corners. At the place of stitching, the folds are fastened with pins in 3 places. Just below the stitching site, the fabric is also pinned together, this is done to secure the fabric. Then, the pads are stitched at the top.

After sewing the pad, you need to leave a little thread around the edges for sewing on the side later.

6. Next, the pads are sewn together on the sides. Stitching is done by hand, as it is inconvenient to get it on a machine. To begin, sew the sides on one side. On the other hand, the sides are not sewn together; this is done so that the buckwheat husk can be filled in.

7. Then, the process of filling the buckwheat husks begins. First, marks are made on the level of filling of the pads. The pads are filled to 68%. 13 cm is not filled in, this distance is counted for marks. The counting occurs not from the very side of the pad, but from the place where the pads are sewn together. Next, the pads are covered with buckwheat husks. The two outer pads are filled 95%, due to this, one will act as a small cushion under the neck, the other will fix the top of the head. At the end, the remaining sides, where the husk was poured, are sewn together. The bottom pillow is ready.

DIY pillow

If for some reason it is not possible to purchase an orthopedic product for the tailbone in a specialized store, you can try to make it yourself from scrap materials. Most likely, in terms of its functional qualities, such a product will be somewhat inferior to a purchased model, but it is also capable of relieving the load on a sore spine and eliminating discomfort from prolonged sitting.

First, select the desired shape of the model, measure the parameters of the surface of the chair or armchair on which you intend to use the coccyx pillow, and make a drawing of the future product. It is necessary to select the material for the cover (it must be durable, wear-resistant and breathable) and the internal filling. It is convenient to use foam rubber or a special material in the form of small balls (it can be found in craft stores) as a filler when making a remedy for relieving pain in the tailbone area with your own hands.

Two parts are cut out from the fabric for the cover, focusing on the prepared drawing and not forgetting about seam allowances (2–3 cm). Having connected the parts with the front side inward, they are sewn together, leaving a hole necessary for filling the product with the selected material. The tailbone pillow is almost ready for use. The resulting cover is turned inside out, filled with foam rubber or other material, and the remaining hole is sewn up.

To make an item with your own hands, it is useful to sew an additional cover from wear-resistant dense fabric. It can be easily removed and, if necessary, machine washed or simply cleaned. This designer orthopedic pillow for the coccyx can become an interior decoration and an interesting design element for your office.

Treatment of a coccyx fracture

The most dangerous is a displaced fracture. Due to such damage, a person experiences difficulty moving, and bone fragments injure the soft tissues and nerves around the tailbone.

Such a fracture can only be treated surgically, since all fragments must be removed. In extreme cases, the entire tailbone may need to be removed.

If a displaced fracture is not detected, then treatment will be conservative. The patient is prescribed bed rest and analgesics (tablets and ointments). The pain subsides by the end of the week.

Types of orthopedic pillows

The tailbone pillow has several types. Round inflatable options are very compact - they are suitable for travel. True, they are not very comfortable for sitting on them for a long time. There are also non-inflatable analogues made from:

  • polyurethane foam,
  • foam rubber,
  • latex.

These pillows are very comfortable and therefore popular. They can handle a weight of no more than 120 kilograms.

An orthopedic ring for the coccyx effectively reduces the load received by the sacrum while maintaining posture. A square or rectangular tailbone cushion is perfect for a car seat. The ribbed bottom surface fits perfectly on it. This option is optimal for those who spend a lot of time driving.

There are also models that remember the shape. The products are stuffed with special fillings that allow the pillow to maintain the shape that is most comfortable for the owner. A simple inflatable orthopedic seat cushion for the tailbone can also be purchased. This is the best budget option, simply placed on a chair.

Selection rules

Before you purchase an orthopedic chair cushion (or other model) for your tailbone, it is important to pay attention to its characteristics. Rectangular options are stationary and fit well on the seats.

They are suitable for car seats or office chairs in case of sedentary work. By supporting the body in the correct position, they correctly distribute the load on the spine. This means they are useful not only for pain relief, but also for disease prevention.

Cone-shaped analogues are suitable for the prevention of bedsores, since they maintain air exchange between the body and the surface on which a person lies or sits. Models similar in shape to a donut or a lifebuoy for the tailbone are suitable for relieving stress. These are the best options if:

  • hemorrhoids,
  • prostatitis,
  • injuries,
  • period after childbirth,
  • recovery after surgery.

The effectiveness with which a pillow provides relief for the tailbone depends to a large extent on its material. Particularly relevant:

  • latex,
  • felt,
  • polyurethane.

There are also compositions with memory effect. When choosing an orthopedic circle for the tailbone, you should also pay attention to such parameters as:

  • duration of use,
  • resistance to washing,
  • no toxicity,
  • hygroscopicity,
  • no allergy to the material.

Some models use buckwheat husk - an environmentally friendly material that practically does not cause allergies to anyone. The shelf life of this model is within three years. Latex lasts up to ten years, while the pillow retains its orthopedic qualities.

Remember to check how much weight the product can support. Some models have their limitations.

Making the top pillow

1. . The top pillow is sewn in exactly the same way as the bottom one. The only difference is that it has its own templates and when stitched it turns out a little smaller. Therefore, steps 1 to 6 are done identically as when sewing the bottom pillow.

2. Covering with buckwheat husks. First, marks are made on the level of filling of the pads. The pads are filled to 75%. 9 cm is not filled in; this distance is counted for marks. The counting occurs not from the very side of the pad, but from the place of stitching. Next, the pads are covered with buckwheat husks. The two outer pads fall asleep, like all the others. At the end, the remaining sides, where the husk was poured, are sewn together.

Indications and contraindications

A well-chosen tailbone pillow is recommended for anyone who leads a sedentary lifestyle. By reducing pressure on the pelvic area, it normalizes blood circulation in the back and helps in maintaining correct posture. For those who suffer from osteochondrosis or hemorrhoids, this product is indicated to reduce pain and stress on the pelvic area. People with impaired musculoskeletal system are also recommended to use orthopedic pillows. Such products will be useful for problems such as:

  • damage to the hip joint or tailbone,
  • pelvic diseases,
  • failures in the integrity of the pelvic ring,
  • diseases of the rectum,
  • rehabilitation after spinal surgery.

Using a pillow speeds up recovery and makes it easier during rehabilitation.

After childbirth, painful sensations in the tailbone are caused by sharp contractions, as well as injuries to the ligaments and muscles in the pelvic floor and the area of the coccyx and sacrum. It is almost impossible to sit on any surface without a special pillow with such problems, especially if an episiotomy or cesarean section was performed, or hemorrhoids worsened.

The product is suitable for almost everyone. It is not recommended to use it for people suffering from acne and other skin inflammations. There is a possibility of allergic reactions to the substances contained in the pillow, so it is important to choose a breathable, natural material.

Purpose and functions

Pain in the back and sacral region occurs due to disturbances in the functioning of the musculoskeletal system. An exacerbation of the syndrome occurs when pressure occurs on the tailbone, a person sits on a hard surface, and abruptly changes the position of the body.

To avoid discomfort when performing routine activities, it is recommended to use a tailbone pillow.

What are the benefits of an orthopedic pillow under the butt:

  • reducing the load on the spine, pelvic ring, sacrum, coccyx;
  • eliminating the pressure of the seat surface on the skeletal elements;
  • eliminating pain and discomfort while a person is sitting;
  • assistance in maintaining good posture;
  • acceleration of the rehabilitation process after injuries;
  • improving blood circulation.

The anatomical device reduces the risk of pathologies associated with sedentary work:

  1. Scoliosis.
  2. Kyphosis.
  3. Osteochondrosis.

Proper blood circulation in the pelvic organs is maintained. There is virtually no risk of tumors or hemorrhoids. Some people actively use an orthopedic pillow to sleep while sitting.

DIY pillow

If a specialized orthopedic pillow for the coccyx cannot be purchased in a store or pharmacy, it is realistic to produce the product yourself from materials available at hand. Perhaps a product of this kind will not be so functional and effective, however, it can also alleviate a person’s condition during prolonged sitting or in other situations.

You should start by choosing a suitable shape for the pillow. Next, measure the surface on which the product is to be placed. After this, they begin to draw a drawing of the creation. The material chosen for the cover is wear-resistant and durable, but at the same time breathable. It is most convenient to use foam rubber as a filler when making a handmade pillow. Material in the form of small balls, which can be purchased at handicraft shops, is also suitable.

A couple of parts are cut out on the case according to the drawn drawing. It is important to remember about seam allowances of two to three centimeters. The parts are connected with the right sides inward and then sewn together, not forgetting to leave a hole through which the pillow will be filled with the selected material.

The orthopedic pillow under the coccyx is almost ready for use. Now the cover is turned inside out, filled with material prepared in advance, and then the hole left for filling is sewn up. An additional cover made of dense, wear-resistant material will come in handy for everyday use. It can then be removed, washed or simply cleaned.

The finished product will not only help a person with a coccyx disease or feel more comfortable when sitting for long periods of time, but will also adequately decorate the interior.

As a rule, an orthopedic pillow for the coccyx, without losing its properties, lasts five years. To extend the shelf life, you need to properly care for the product. Clean regularly (dry) and do not expose to too high temperatures. Regular dry cleaning is not advisable in this case. It is advisable to wash the pillowcase in warm water using gentle detergents. Treat your orthopedic product with care. The device should be used only for its intended purpose.

An orthopedic pillow is indispensable for a fractured coccyx, pelvic diseases, as well as for people with sedentary work. A special circle is placed on a chair. A properly selected device will help avoid discomfort and pain in the back.

Pillow fillings

  • Latex. It can be artificial and natural. Quickly returns to its original shape, has firmness and elasticity. Smooth to the touch and highly soft.
  • Foam. This material has a “memory effect”: after use, it remembers the contours of the human body, anatomically adapting to them. Each subsequent use will be as comfortable as possible for the owner.
  • Polyurethane. A popular and in demand material for orthopedic products. Keeps its shape well and has a breathable effect. Air regulation is also enhanced by perforation, which is found in most models.
  • Buckwheat husk. A natural filler that not only has supporting properties, but also creates a micromassage effect, stimulating blood circulation, relieving fatigue and pain. The only drawback is the characteristic sound during use.

All presented fillers are hygroscopic, hypoallergenic, wear-resistant. The service life of orthopedic pillows for the coccyx is up to 10 years (for husks - no more than 3 years).

Benefits of using a tailbone pillow

Pain in the back and sacral region is caused by disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The syndrome is aggravated by pressure on the tailbone, sitting on a hard surface, or sudden changes in posture. To avoid discomfort in everyday activities, it is recommended to place a special circle under the tailbone.

Benefits of an orthopedic pillow:

  • reduces the load on the spine, sacrum, pelvic ring, coccyx;
  • softens the pressure of a hard surface on skeletal elements;
  • eliminates pain symptoms and discomfort when sitting;
  • helps maintain correct posture;
  • accelerates rehabilitation after injuries;
  • stimulates blood circulation.

The medical device reduces the risk of developing pathologies caused by sedentary work: osteochondrosis, kyphosis, scoliosis, lordosis. Prevents disruption of blood circulation in the pelvic organs, reducing the risk of developing hemorrhoids, neoplasms, and tumors.

Functions of the coccyx pillow

  • Formation of correct posture.
  • Improving blood circulation in the pelvic organs.
  • Reducing the load on the coccyx, sacrum and spine.
  • Elimination of discomfort and pain.
  • Rehabilitation after operations or injuries.

Due to sedentary work or uncomfortable sitting conditions, various spinal pathologies can develop, including kyphosis, scoliosis and osteochondrosis. The anatomical pillow has a preventive effect. Regular use significantly reduces the risk of developing hemorrhoids and other diseases of the pelvic organs.

Indications and contraindications

The device is used as a preventive measure or serves as an auxiliary treatment.

Indications for use of the medical device:

  1. Bruises, injuries, operations of the lumbosacral region. The sitting circle relieves pain in the tailbone during the treatment of fractures, and also normalizes blood circulation and reduces the load on the vertebrae.
  2. Rehabilitation period after operations and injuries. The device promotes proper fusion of skeletal elements, distributing the load of the body.
  3. Pathologies of the pelvic organs, rectum. The pillow reduces pain symptoms and prevents the appearance of stagnant processes.
  4. Pregnancy and postpartum period. The device reduces the load on the spine, helps to recover after a difficult birth, and prevents the appearance of hemorrhoids.
  5. Sedentary lifestyle. The pillow is recommended to be used for the prevention of diseases of the lumbosacral region, spinal column, and small pelvis.
  6. Patients confined to a wheelchair. In addition to distributing the load, the device helps to avoid bedsores due to constant sitting.

The medical coccyx pillow is convenient to use at home, at work, or in a car seat. There are even special models created for drivers that allow them to spend a long time behind the wheel.

There are practically no contraindications for use. People suffering from skin diseases should use it with caution. An allergic reaction to the components is possible. Sensitive patients are advised to choose natural materials.

It is important to use the orthopedic device correctly. Do not use a pillow on a soft seat. In this case, the buttocks collapse and the anal veins are pinched.

What to look for when choosing

The product can be round, oval, square and rectangular. A prerequisite is the presence of a special cutout at the site of the coccyx, which will reduce the load on the bone. Most often, the shape is selected depending on the seat, as well as the size of the pillow.

The design of the case also plays an important role. Preference should be given to removable options that can be removed and washed at any time. They contain a combination of safe natural and synthetic materials. The cover must also be breathable.

Ease of use plays a significant role when choosing. The pillow should be comfortable to sit on, without any discomfort. In addition, it should not be larger in size than the seat itself. The height is also selected depending on the chair, since the legs should have support and not hang in the air. Before choosing products for the treatment and prevention of the tailbone, it is recommended to consult with your doctor.

Classification of coccyx pillows

Manufacturers of orthopedic pillows offer a wide range of models. This allows you to choose the most suitable product, based on the causes of disorders, body structure features and price.

The main classification of orthopedic circles:

  • according to form;
  • by filler;
  • according to the patient's body weight.

The parameters of the product are selected individually and previously discussed with the doctor.

Pillows for the coccyx are primarily distinguished by their geometric shape:

  • Rectangular. Due to its parameters, the product is stationary. The device is securely fixed in the workplace or in the car seat. Used to relieve pain symptoms and prevent postural disorders. Helps to take the correct body position when sitting and proportionally distributes the load.
  • Cone-shaped. Anti-decubitus pillows are most often produced in this form. The product controls air exchange between the contacted part of the body and the external surface. In addition, it softens painful contact with a bed or chair.
  • Round, donut-shaped. The products are shaped like a lifebuoy. A thick cover is put on a special ring with a hole. The device relieves stress and pain from the back, sacrum, and pelvis. Indicated for hemorrhoids, prostatitis, pregnancy, and the postpartum period. Used if a person has hit himself hard or broken his tailbone.

Round models with a hole are the most popular. The devices proportionally distribute the load on the body, control the curvature of the spinal column, and prevent dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system.

The operation and properties of an orthopedic pillow depend on the material from which the product is made. Popular types of filler:

  • latex;
  • felt;
  • polyurethane;
  • with memory effect.

The latter type is in demand among buyers, as it takes the shape of its owner’s body. It is convenient to use inflatable air bags or balancing discs. Due to its mobility when deflated, the model can be taken with you everywhere.

It is important to pay attention to the hypoallergenicity of the components, the properties of the materials, and the service life. For example, a product made from buckwheat hull will last 3 years, and from latex - 10 years.

This indicator should be looked at by patients who are overweight. Some models have weight restrictions. For example, inflatable pillows are rated up to 120 kg.

Errors in choosing a device will make the thing useless. Such a device will not relieve unpleasant sensations. In addition, it may cause new deviations.

Pain in the tailbone

Pain in the coccyx area sometimes does not go away for a long time and often interferes with normal life. And the saddest thing is that such pain can signal serious pelvic diseases.

Manifestations

Pain in the coccyx (scientifically called coccydynia) is most often of a pulling and aching nature. Usually the pain spreads to the buttocks, genitals, and thighs. As a rule, discomfort occurs during a certain position of the body, for example when sitting or when standing up, and can also occur during bowel movements. Sometimes, along with increasing pain, sweating, rapid heartbeat, or pale skin may appear.

Types and causes of pain in the tailbone

With primary coccydynia

(approximately 30% of all cases of coccydynia) the source of pain is the tailbone itself, for example after an injury or after childbirth. When the vertebrae of the coccyx are displaced, pain develops in it, as well as in the surrounding tissues (muscles and ligaments). At the same time, although unpleasant sensations cause a lot of inconvenience, they are not a serious threat to life and health.

Features of choice

Only a correctly selected product will have a positive effect on the patient’s health. When purchasing and using, you should adhere to certain recommendations:

  1. Before purchasing, test the device for comfort. Try sitting on different models. Make a choice based on specialist recommendations and convenient parameters.
  2. Choose a cushion thickness that matches the height of your desk chair. Keep in mind that a high chair and a thick product will make you slouch, and this will disrupt your posture.
  3. Do not use additional padding on the chair. If you sit low, it is better to purchase a thicker pillow. Auxiliary substrates will not allow the medical device to properly distribute the load.
